So in typical me fashion this thing hasn't been updated for ever.
So this means that if i try and update everything since i posted last i would be here all month.
So lots has happened and i have been very distracted and busy.
Good thing include me getting a (and still having) a nifty job.
I may get motivated occasionally to put random things in here but don't count on it.
I may also get motivated to post cool geek stuff i have been doing but don't count on that either.

Skuppy Lyrics
These seem to say lots about where i am at the moment.
But then again Skinny Puppy usually does.
----------------------------
its come to rape the soul
the meaning of control
it's waiting for
he's waiting obscene
in dark dishonest times
the strangest things unwind
and undermine the undecided fate
forced time
all divided
trips fine
line
warmth and craziness
lead all spilling
facing death
the binds that tie
push aside
unrelenting lips smack
talks
read the moving lips
willing pillows
breaks the neck
hung out to die
and in the steep of luck
my god feels false and sold
to exercise what seems that cannot hold
craving
anything
whats goin down
replicate
left it down on to hit
what is it
nothing
thrust knives
deep the bed of it
why try
overcoming this
when the killing
shapes the wrist
paints the sky red eye
crossed eyes
undecided
shed time
lies
all because of this
weather killing takes my breath
a lasting sigh
all life starts with death
all death starts with life
ever circles back again
ever falls to regain
all life is reborn
all hope is to know
righteous places
rightoues times
even though
we live to die

But then again Skinny Puppy usually does.

new current favourite replacement phone
while getting my daily (though hourly is more appropriate) Engadget fix i found this. ASUS shows far-out Aura concept phone.

if this ever gets built and is capable of talking to linux i just might get one.

vista prices
Up until yesterday i was still slightly worried about whether people would start considering linux as a viable alternative to Vista.
The extra information i received was the price structure for Vista in Australia.
I am going to ignore the upgrade edition prices since it seems those are pointless unless you really really know what you are doing and have a computer less than 12 months old.
(what amuses me is the naming scheme and the sneaky prices on this brochure.)
price comparison of the different versions.
Home Basic Full Version $385.00
Home Premium Full Version $455.00
Business Full Version $565.00
Ultimate Full Version $749.00
MS Office 2007 Prices.
Home and Student $249.00
Small Business $749.00
Professional $849.00
Ultimate $1169.00
and just in case you still doesn't know
Ubuntu doesn't charge anything for its basic version and if you want a version with more software it takes 5 seconds to update your software repositories.
and the office software is still free and doesn't have crippled versions that are missing those bits of software you might need.
so if anyone is curious.
if anyone asks me to sell them a computer with vista on it i will be saying no since i really don't see the point in charging someone money for software that they can just as easily get for free and will be just as usable and useful (if not more useable and useful).

Linus is being Linus again.
if you don't want to know about linux kernel issues then don't bother clicking on this.
Linus On Denying Non-GPL Modules: Not in My Kernel Tree
Basically for those not willing to read the rather long an well put post.
Some people want to stop non GPL modules getting loaded into the linux kernel.
This includes all those nice graphics drivers that let linux geeks play quake without rebooting and drivers for little bits of hardware line wifi cards and such.
Linus Torvaldis (the guy who started this whole linux thing and one of the primary kernel developers) said Naff off!
This makes me happy since i am one of those linux geeks that like being able to play OpenGL games on my linux box and since i don't have windows on here i would likely get even more stressed cause i wouldn't be able to shoot nicely rendered versions of reality.

extreme geekiness
i got bored today and decided i would install ubuntu on the business server.
it is in no way going to be a normal install.
i am intending to do it from home.
if you have ever attempted this before you probably have a vague idea how i am going to do it.
then again maybe not.
it should work (as i have sort of done it before but not remotely)
this is how i intend to do it
install ububtu-6.10-server on a machine at home.
gzip the resulting install image.
scp it to my server.
repartition the spare 60 gig disk in my server.
chroot into the soon to be default root partition.
edit the /etc/fstab file to reflect the new disk layout.
edit /boot/grub/menu.1st with appropriate disk locations.
install new software.
setup current web hosting setup and databases from current install.
reboot.
cross fingers.
enjoy new server setup which is way easier to keep up to date than a gentoo install that hasn't been updated for so long now i cant remember. (its at least 296 days since that's the current uptime)
wish me luck (though it will probably be finished by the time anyone actually reads this post).

s/house/home/
so yeah moving in the morning.
will be offline for "6-8 Optus days" which is definitely shorter that "10-14 telstra days"
so apart from finding more reasons to like Optus (i have had my Optus mobile in pre-paid and contract for about 4-5 years and with me that means a lot.
i like nifty things and once i find something nifty i like to keep it (or them)
the cool thing is we will have dedicated rooms instead of two rooms that serve as a kitchen/office/lounge room and a bed room/lounge room/entertainment area.
(and yes since Tuesday i have been taking great delight in using the words Lounge room, Kitchen, Dining room, Office and Kitchen)
business stuff is actually looking rather good.
we finally delivered the office setup i vaguely mentioned in a previous post.
and it actually worked the way i wanted it to, well after deciding to do a server install of edubuntu.
bizare thing was the keyboards weren't working with my ltsp install on kubuntu but once i installed and edubuntu server it all worked just like i wanted to.
so i guess i can add Diskless Workstation's to the business website.
anyway we still have stuff to pack so going away now to do that.
